On 1st October 2024, following a consultation process with parents, staff, the local community and with the support of the Isle of Wight Council, Greenmount Primary School and Gatten & Lake Primary School became The Federation of Greenmount and Gatten & Lake Primary Schools. The federation works together under a single Governing Body with one Head Teacher.
We strive to ensure that the unique character and strength of each school is recognised and celebrated. It is important to us that every child we educate identifies with the special qualities of their school and is proud to be a part of it.
Collaboration is at the very heart of the federation, with the schools working closely together to develop the very best environment to provide a first class education and wider opportunities for our children.
The Federation Governing Body is a highly effective, committed group of people who offer support and challenge as part of the effective leadership of both schools. Their role is to oversee the way that the schools are run, ensuring that they fulfil all statutory responsibilities and that the children get the best education possible.
The key functions of the Governing Body are to:
- Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.
- Hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the schools and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management.
- Oversee the financial performance of the schools and make sure that their money is well spent.
In order to meet the core functions identified above, governors undertake extensive monitoring throughout each school year. Governors assume responsibilities for clearly identified aspects of school oversight, including education performance/attainment (through data analysis), composition and effectiveness of the school curriculum, SEND, health and safety and financial management. This monitoring manifests itself in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to:
- Learning walks
- Pupil/Parent voice
- Meetings with key members of staff – linked to governor responsibilities
- In-depth analysis of school data and pupil performance
- Head Teacher performance management
- Meetings with subject leaders
- Meetings with the SENCo to discuss special education needs and inclusive provision
- Financial oversight through discussion and monitoring of financial decision-making, including capital build projects, investment in human and capital resources etc.
- Curriculum intent, implementation and impact
The Executive Headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and working to the objectives agreed by the governing board. The Governing Body provides the framework within which she and her staff work.

Getting In Touch
If you have any concerns about the school these should always be raised in the first place with the Head teacher, Mrs Day who is responsible for the day to day running of the school. If you are not satisfied with the result of this or have other matters which you think should be raised with Governors you can contact them at alison.lockey_clerk@gmgl-federation.co.uk. The Chair of Governors will be happy to discuss any issues you have – but again note that day-to-day issues should be raised first with the school.
The role of the school governor is demanding but very rewarding and is a good way to give something back to your local community. If you are interested in finding out more about governance or feel you have something to offer please get in touch – again via the school office.
